Water Heater Types

Heating water accounts for up to 20 percent of the average home’s energy budget. Some gas-fired tankless water heaters are claimed to cut energy costs by up to half over regular storage heaters. But their added up-front costs mean it pays to look before you leap. Compare the types of water heaters.

Storage-tank heaters

Most of these are essentially steel cylinders fed by a cold-water inlet pipe (the dip tube) that protrudes into the tank (this line includes the shutoff valve). Water is heated in the tank, and hot water exits through a hot-water pipe atop the tank. Another pipe that emerges from the tank includes the temperature and pressure-relief valve, which opens if either exceeds a preset level. You’ll also find a drain valve near the tank bottom and a control unit outside for setting temperatures and, on gas models, controlling the pilot-light valve.
Gas is the fuel of choice if you already have natural gas service or can run a gas line to your home economically. Gas models cost more than electrics. But on the basis of national-average fuel costs, a gas water heater will cost you about half as much to run as a comparable electric model. Thus, a gas heater might amortize the up-front difference in cost in as little as a year. While you’ll also find oil-fired storage heaters, they’re relatively expensive, because they include the tank and an oil burner. That’s why homes with oil heat typically use an electric water heater.

Tankless heaters

Tankless models (a.k.a. instantaneous water heaters) are suitcase-sized units that heat water only when needed by using an electric coil (typically for low demand) or natural gas (for high demand) to heat water passing through a heat exchanger inside. They eliminate the risk of tank failure and the energy lost by constantly reheating water, though their heat exchanger can clog or fail. What’s more, they’re expensive to buy and install, and include limitations on hot-water flow rates, a possible issue in large households. And cooler incoming water in winter typically means your hot water may not be as hot as you like.

Hybrid electric heaters

These have a conventional electric storage heater paired with a heat pump that extracts heat from the surrounding air and uses it to help heat the water. Models we tested used about 60 percent less energy than standard electric heaters, which account for about half of all water heaters sold. And while hybrids cost more than electric-only models, installation is similar and payback time is short.
But hybrids also have their downsides. Because the heat pump is usually on top, they need as much as 7 feet clearance from floor to ceiling. You’ll also need up to 1,000 cubic feet of uncooled space to capture enough heat from the air, along with a condensate pump (about $150) if there’s no drain nearby. Hybrid heaters are noisier than conventional storage-tank heaters, exhaust cool air, and can rob some heated air in winter.

Solar water heaters

All solar heaters supplement an electric heater in basically the same way: A roof-mounted collector absorbs the sun’s heat and transfers it to an antifreeze-like fluid in a closed-loop system that runs to the water tank. The collector is typically a flat panel or an array of glass cylinders called evacuated tubes. The best delivered stellar savings in summer, making them an attractive option for warm, sunny areas. But savings suffered on cold and cloudy days. And even with federal and local rebates, the thousands you’ll typically spend to buy and install one can mean you’ll wait anywhere from 10 to 30 years before their savings pay for their costs.

Condensing gas water heaters

Less familiar to consumers are condensing gas water heaters but under the new energy regulations, they have become an option for homes that need a water heater with a capacity of 55 gallons or more and that heat with gas. Condensing gas water heaters capture much of the heat that normally goes up the flue by cooling exhaust gases well below 140 degrees F, the temperature at which water vapor condenses into water.

Industrial boiler systems use water and steam as heat carriers.
Heat is necessary to heat buildings and used for many industrial processes.
Heat is usually produced centrally and passed on via a transport medium, the heat carrier. This heat carrier is transported to the respective consumer, there the heat is transferred to the consumer, and the cooled-down heat carrier medium is returned to the central heat producer to be heated up again.
Hot water or steam boilers are relatively similar in design. The boiler pressure vessel is a horizontal, cylindrical tube closed at both sides with an end plate and insulated all around. There is a flame tube (1st pass) in this pressure vessel, which is fired through a burner and an internally situated reversing chamber that reverses the flue gases and leads them back in the 2nd smoke tube pass. On the front of the boiler is an external reversing chamber, which again reverses the flue gases and leads them to the end of the boiler in the 3rd smoke tube pass. Hot water boilers are normally completely filled with water during operation. Steam boilers on the other hand are only 3/4 filled with water; the upper quarters the steam space.
Industrial boiler system works on fuel to create heat:
The industrial boiler system is a hot water or steam boiler operated with a certain kind of fuel. The boiler heats up or evaporates the water inside it, which is then transported
to the consumers though a pipe system. The transport energy is generated by pumps, in case of steam the transport is based on inherent pressure. The condensed steam returns to the boiler where it can be heated again. Loss of water must be compensated by fresh water to avoid corrosion. Flue gases are
discharged into the atmosphere through a chimney. Efficient systems additionally use the residual heat in the flue gases. Sectional drawing of a three pass shell boiler:

  • Industrial Boilers Laundries and cleaning firms:

This is an obvious example of what steam is used for. It is just easier to get rid of spots and
dirt when the washing water is heated. Our washing machine at home does the same, however
with electrical heating. In large laundries this would be inefficient as electrical energy is too
expensive. Steam can also be perfectly used for downstream processes like pressing, using the
mangle, ironing or finishing. We know this process from steam-ironing at home; steam simply
    removes all creases.

    Industrial Boilers for Food industry

Food must often be heated or boiled during processing. Thus this industrial sector obviously
needs plenty of thermal energy. However, some steam applications are still stunning; a good
    example is potato processing.

Breweries

Most people know that a good and tasty beer consists of hops, malt and water is a complex production process.
The brewer calls this mashing. The mash is heated to various temperatures in two to four hours.
Now guess which heat carrier is normally used for this? That is the steam we previously generated with the steam boiler.
The use of boiler systems in practice
Industrial hot water boiler systems for generating thermal heat are very similar to the
household heating boilers in our cellars. The main difference is that industrial boilers are
dimensioned significantly larger, so their heating capacity is not only sufficient for a family
home but also for hotels, hospitals, skyscrapers, industrial buildings or entire districts. When
using process heat generated by steam boiler systems the individual applications are far more
versatile. They are used in many industry sectors. But is all this just hot air or what exactly is the
steam used for?

Let us Look at a few industrial sectors and have a closer look at them.

Breweries first have to the barrels and bottles clean them before they can be refilled. This process uses steam to
heat up the water needed for cleaning. Amazing, isn’t it?

Building materials industry

Large amounts of steam are also necessary for the production of molded bricks. The basic
materials like sand, lime, water, etc. are mixed and pressed to relatively loose stone compounds.
We remember that from making mud pies in the sandbox. Subsequently, the stones are
transported to a huge pressure vessel (autoclave) which is then closed and steam is injected.
The stones ave to harden at a temperature of approximately 200 °C and a pressure of
about 16 bar for a certain period of time and can then be withdrawn as finished stones. How
stable our sand castles would have been if we could have used this technology!

Sewer pipe rehabilitation

What to do if there is a drain leakage? This problem can either be solved by means of
excavation works at the underground pipes and renewal of the sewage pipe systems or with
rehabilitation tubes. These tubes are over dimensioned hoses that are inserted in the pipes
without excavation work and then inflated with steam. The plastic hose attaches itself to the
sewage pipe under application of pressure and temperature and the pipe can continue to be
used for many years.
